Hearing God’s voice is one of the greatest gifts we have been given. Often, though we feel frustrated as if we are doing something wrong, but really, the key is that we need to discover the unique way God speaks to us.
Havilah Cunnington joined me on my show this week. She is a Bible teacher, author, small business owner, and itinerant speaker obsessed with helping people live the abundant life God has called them to live.
Havilah shares with us wisdom and lessons about how God speaks to each of us differently, and the key to understanding the unique way He speaks to us is through our prophetic personality out of her new book, Created to Hear God: 4 Unique and Proven Ways to Confidently Discern His Voice.
Let’s dive in.
Havilah shares that there are three voices that we consistently hear. We hear ourselves, like our own self-talk. We hear God, and we hear the enemy. And so, how do we know which one is God? Because if God is saying don’t do it, then we don’t wanna do it. But if it’s the enemy saying don’t do it, well, we want to do it. And if it’s just ourselves saying do it, then we’re like, well, no one’s really backing me up.
First of all, the hardest person to hear God for is yourself. Because you have ulterior motives, you have desires, you have a bad filter, and it’s not your fault. You just want to hear what you want to hear. And that’s difficult. It’s very hard to hear God for yourself. So you need to be aware of that. That is a vulnerability that we have. And then also, if we don’t know the word of God, then we don’t know if God is contradicting what he’s saying. So a lot of people will say, this is what God is saying, but they don’t know the word of God. And then it sounds like he’s contradicting, and God is not confused.
Secondly, here are a few questions to ask:
Is there wisdom in this? Do I know that this is the right thing for me? How do I find wisdom?
Havilah reminds us that the Bible says there is wisdom in a multitude of counsel. So she goes to people who love God, trust God, know God, and get counsel from them. And then she also tests God, but not like the Bible says not to test him, but she fleeces him. So, she says we are allowed to ask as many times as I want. Is this what you’re saying? Is this what you’re doing? Please close the door if it’s not you, God.
“There’s a recording of what you said to me that night…[I thought] my sweet little Southern Baptist heart doesn’t understand this, but there is a more charismatic part of the church that gets it and feels comfortable hearing from God. And it was later after that you told me, ‘We hear from God in different ways’. And you went through all of that and it changed my life forever.”

“What I’ve learned about God is that he really doesn’t care what our title is or what we theologically know. He knows us – our personhood. God knows our hopes and our dreams. He knows our future. God knows what happened in the past. He knows the secrets of our hearts.”
