Today, I’m with a powerhouse of fun and brilliance- Havilah Cunnington. She was just recently on the show teaching us how to hear from God, and now she’s sharing the behind-the-scenes of her work and her ministry.
She runs a Christian non-profit, Truth to Table, and she doesn’t shy away from bringing you all the details. This is a dream episode of Smart Girl Summer. You’re going to love this one!
Havilah Cunnington is a Bible teacher, author, small business owner, and itinerant speaker obsessed with helping people live the abundant life God has called them to live.
Havilah’s new book, Created to Hear God: 4 Unique and Proven Ways to Confidently Discern His Voice, teaches that God speaks to each of us differently, and the key to understanding the unique way He speaks to us is through our prophetic personality.
Let’s dive in on building a nonprofit ministry.
I’ve loved to watch Havilah build her nonprofit ministry throughout the years with great respect, so I asked her to walk me through what happened when she started building. Havilah says that when the economy crashed in 2008, she was let go of her job, and she had four little kids with no money in the bank and no plan B. She had to walk away from everything, the website, product, etc., and she had nothing. Havilah told herself that would never happen again – she wouldn’t give all her time and resources to building a foundation she couldn’t take with her.
She started from scratch, learning from marketing and webinar experts, and understanding the importance of email lists. She began with a free Bible study and live teachings on Facebook. Her dedication paid off, and today, she has a staggering 250K email subscribers, a testament to her hard work and the value she brings to her audience.
I asked Havilah what strategy she uses to protect herself from not letting comparison take her out because, for women in business, this is something we do a lot. For example, we will see a woman ten years ahead of us and think, “Well, I’ll never be there,” then we get discouraged.
Havilah says she’s careful who she follows and watches. If she’s following and watching her competition, then she’s vulnerable to plagiarizing and mimicking. And she also had to understand what success meant for her. Because success for someone else can be getting invited to all the events, but Havialh doesn’t like being on the road all the time. Her success is having the residual income she can be with her family, and she doesn’t owe anybody anything. She says we have to be focused on what success means to us and the solution we bring to people and not worry about what others are doing or thinking.
Havilah says she’s still trying to figure out what is working on social media because it changes so much, but in her mind, this is what is working:
Let’s jump into coaching!
Let’s talk about how to actually take action because this is holding so many of us back. It’s a trap of what I call inaction, the trap of inaction. We often get stuck thinking we need more information because we can feel confident about moving forward if we have more information. We want to ensure that our next step is perfect, so we end up not taking any steps. That has to sound familiar.
Here’s the thing. Action creates information. It is a feedback loop. When you do something, anything, you learn from it. If you stay still, you learn nothing. So don’t freeze up. Make a choice and move. The only way to get more information is by doing things with the information you already have. If you don’t do anything, Nothing new can come your way.
We all fall into this trap. We’ve all done it. We face a tough decision, and we freeze. We don’t know what else to do. So when we don’t know what else to do, we do nothing. But doing nothing is the worst thing you can do. The best thing you can do is keep moving, even if you need clarification on whether it’s the right move. Something is better than nothing!
“You better have a business mindset because it doesn’t just happen with the sprinkle of favor. It really has to be a conscious decision to build.”
2:47
“Social media is still really great. Humor is working. Solving problems is really working and if you can still meet the need there, it’s great.”
18:10
“You have to niche down. Keep niching until you find your people.”
20:26
“Your reader, your listener, your viewer are asking what’s in it for me all the time. So that is the goal.”
22:29
“Failure doesn’t always happen in the beginning. Failure happens when we don’t stop and assess if it still has value.”
